Anti-drug drives ahead of city polls

DHAKA: Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) started conducting special drives against narcotics in the city ahead of Dhaka’s two city corporations polls, slated to be held on April 28.

Detective Branch (DB) of DMP and police forces from respective thanas are jointly driving the operations aiming to curtail the widespread use of narcotics centering city polls.

Meanwhile, intelligence has gathered information on the matter.

At least 1,500 drug peddlers have been identified while five hundred places have been identified as danger spots for drug dealings, according to intelligence sources.

DMP joint commissioner Monirul Islam told banglanews that citywide drives to arrest the terrorists are underway. Besides, accused of other crimes are being arrested.

The order to conduct drive has been given aiming to restrain the influence of drug dealings centering the city polls, he added.

Police at each of city thana is running anti-drug operation separately in their respective areas.

Badda Thana officer-in-charge (OC) Qamrul Faruque told banglanews that they have already started operations to nab the identified drug dealers and many are being arrested everyday.

Drives against narcotics are going on and it will continue in day and night, said Pallabi Thana OC Sayed Ziauzzaman.
