DHAKA: The Supreme Court’s (SC) Appellate Division ordered both the prosecution and the defense to submit the summary of Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Motiur Rahman Nizami’s appeal against ICT’s death penalty within March 31.
A four-member bench of the Appellate Division led by Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha passed the order on Tuesday morning in response to defense appeal for time extension.
The other member of the bench were Justice Nazmun Ara Sultana, Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain and Justice Hasan Foez Siddique
Earlier on February 24, the SC asked to both sides to submit the summary of Nizami’s appeal within two weeks that ended on Monday (March 9).
As the appeal order came to Tuesday’s cause list of the SC, the defense appealed for four more weeks to submit the summery.
Defense’s lawyer Joynul Abedin Tuhin sought the time extension while Attorney General Mahbube Alam moved for state during the hearing.
On October 29, 2014, the International Crimes Tribunal-1 awarded death penalty to Nizami on four charges of war crimes against humanity committed during Bangladesh Liberation War in 1971.
Later, the defense lawyers of the war crimes convict appealed in the apex court on November 23, 2014, challenging the tribunal verdict.
