The High court (HC) has fixed June 2 for the final verdict on the death reference and appeals in the case filed over the killing of retired army major Sinha Mohammad Rashed Khan in police firing at Teknaf in Cox’s Bazar.
HC bench of Justice Md Mostafizur Rahman and Justice Md Saqib Hossain after concluding the hearings on Thursday (May 29), fixed June 2 for the verdict.
The hearing in the case began on April 23.
Major Sinha was shot dead by police on the night of July 31, 2020, at a check-post in Shamlapur along the Marine Drive road in Teknaf.
On January 31, 2022, the Cox’s Bazar District and Sessions Judge’s Court sentenced two accused to death, six to life imprisonment, and acquitted seven others.
The two sentenced to death are then suspended inspector Liaqat Ali of Baharchhara police outpost and suspended officer-in-charge (OC) Pradeep Kumar Das of Teknaf Police Station.
Those given life terms are suspended sub-inspector Nanda Dulal Rakshit, Sagar Dev, Rubel Sharma, and prosecution witnesses Nurul Amin, Md Nejam Uddin, and Ayaz Uddin of Marishbunia village in Baharchhara Union.
As per legal procedure, the death reference of Pradeep Kumar Das and Liaqat Ali was sent to the High Court for approval.
At the same time, all convicted accused filed appeals and jail appeals against the verdict.
