For the first time in more than 30 years, the Chattogram Port Authority has officially revised its tariff schedule, prompting updates across all related websites, software systems, and operational frameworks.

The move comes following a government gazette notification issued on Sunday (Sept 14), signed by Rear Admiral SM Moniruzzaman, Chairman of the port authority.

Effective from Monday (September 15), the new tariff schedule raises charges by an average of 12 paisa per kilogram, according to port calculations.

However, port users and industry stakeholders have expressed concern over the timing of the adjustment, citing global economic pressures and fragile supply chains.

Under the new schedule, all categories of fees—including rent, tolls, rail charges, service fees, and duties—will be collected according to updated rates. The exchange rate has been fixed at Tk 122 per USD, meaning any rise in the dollar rate will further push up charges, as tariffs are collected in US dollars.

Port Secretary Md Omar Faruk told Banglanews that the updated tariff reflects a 35–40% increase in some areas compared to the previous rates. He noted that integration of the revised schedule into all port systems began immediately upon receipt of the gazette, although full implementation may take additional time.

The hike has drawn criticism from key stakeholders. Rakibul Alam, a director of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), said the tariff increase is concerning, especially considering that Chattogram Port is a major gateway for importing raw materials for the garment industry—second only to consumer goods. He emphasized the need for service quality to improve in parallel with rising costs.

Khairul Alam Sujan, a director of the Bangladesh Shipping Agents Association, warned that the hike in port tariffs could pass on added financial pressure to consumers and undermine Bangladesh’s export competitiveness in global markets.

While the port authority argues that the increase is moderate in real terms, comparisons with regional competitors and the impact on major sectors like apparel exports continue to fuel debate over whether the timing is justified.
