Initiatives to preserve heritage of Sylhet

FROM SYLHET: Sylhet, once part of British Indian province of Assam, is full of heritage. Meanwhile, some private initiatives have started to preserve the historic values, publicity and maintenance of various heritage sites of Sylhet.

 

It has been planned to work jointly in coordination with the government efforts from grass root levels to preserve the structures and traditions. Primarily, works have started on 29 heritage sites dividing into natural, historic and cultural.

However, an organization titled ‘Save the Heritage and Environment’ is active here at non-government level. That organization mainly has arranged campaigns for creating awareness about the archeological and historic structures and the enriched cultural environment of Sylhet. A research book containing 21 archeological sites is prepared for publication.  

This time Jalalabad Association of greater Sylhet at Dhaka has taken a new initiative about the 29 heritage sites of greater Sylhet.

Their primary list contains the Mazar of the great Muslim saint Hazrat Shahjalal , Mazar of Muslim saint Shah Paran, the Mazar of Commander of Habiganj Syed Nasiruddin, the fatherland of Chaitanya Dev of Golapganj, the Meghalithik stone of Jaintia, Jaintia palace, the battle place of the Afghans and the Mughals in Dulambapur, Sankar Pasha mosque of Habiganj, the area of King Pratap Singha of Patarkandi, Khoja Mosque established in 1476 AD at Moulvibazar, the Clock of Ali Amzad of Sylhet, the Mazars of Haripur and Darbast, Chunarughat Mazar, Teliapara Bungalow, the palace of Dr. GC Dev of Jokiganj, Bungalow of Poolchara Tea Garden, the two-storey Bungalow of Chatlapur Tea Garden, Lobhachara Tea Garden of Kanaighat and Phulchara Tea Garden bungalow of Zuri.

The natural heritage contains the Tanguar haor, Hakaluki haor, Jalarban Ratargul and Lawachara.

The cultural heritage includes the houses of mystic poets Hasan Raja, Radharaman and Shah Abdul Karim in Sunamganj, the memory of Shitalong Shah of Jokiganj and the largest village of the world Baniachang.

Syed Zaglul Pasha, general secretary of Jalalabad Association told banglanews that they will work for preservation and inform people about the heritages of greater Sylhet.

For this purpose, a 13-member committee has been formed for preservation of heritage and for its publicity. The committee has 13 members.

The committee includes Sohel Ahmed chowdhury as chairman and CQK Mustaque Ahmed and Jalal Ahmed as co-chairman. The members of the committee include chairman of PSC Dr. M Sadique, architect Shakoor Majid, Anowar Hossain Chowdhury and Professor Fatema Chowdhury.

Moreover, Jalalabad Association president CM Tofael Sami, general secretary Syed Jaglul Pasha, vice-president Abdul Qaiyum Chowdhury and members Masuda Akhtar Meena and Shahabuddin Shuva are in the committee.

Syed Zaglul Pasha said, “We are working in coordination with the national organizations from the grass root levels”.

Giving examples he disclosed that for the purpose of wider publicity they are going to build a website and bring out various publications.

The initiators of the organization included architect, researchers, lawyers and journalists.
