Abrar murder case indictment hearing Jan 30

DHAKA: A Dhaka court on Tuesday (Jan 21) took into cognisance the charges against 25 students of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET), accused in the Abrar Fahad murder case.

Judge KM Emrul Kayesh of Metropolitan Session Judge’s Court of Dhaka also fixed January 30 for the charge frame hearing in the case.

Additional Public Prosecutor Taposh Kumar Pal said that the 22 accused appeared before the court and rest three are absconding.

Three of the accused - Morsheduzzaman Jishan, Mustafa Rafid and Ehtashamul Rabbi Tanim - are still on the run.

Abrar Fahad, aged 21, a student of electrical and electronic engineering department at BUET(Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology), was tortured to death reportedly by BCL leaders of BUET unit at Sher-e-Bangla Hall of the university on October 7.

Abrar's father filed a murder case against 19 people with Chawkbazar police station on the day of the murder.

On October 11, BUET authorities banned all political activities on the campus and suspended all the 19 accused of the murder case.

Police have already detained 21 persons in the case and several of them were remanded. Some of them gave confessional statements of their involvement with the murder.

On November 13, police submitted a charge sheet against 25 students of Buet — most of them, Bangladesh Chhatra League leaders and activists — in the case.

On January 12, Morshed Amartya Islam, one of the four fugitive accused in BUET student Abrar Fahad murder case, surrendered before a Dhaka Court. Later the court sent him to jail rejecting his bail petition.

Later on January 13, the case was shifted to the Metropolitan Sessions Judges’ Court, Dhaka from Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate for its trial.
