No arrest sans warrant: EC Secretary

DHAKA: Election Commission (EC) on Tuesday (JAN 7) directed authorities concerned not to arrest the candidates of Dhaka north and south city corporations election and their supporters without any warrant issued earlier.

While talking to the journalists at his office this noon, EC Senior Secretary Md Alamgir informed about the decision the EC took yesterday (Jan 6).

He said they talked to Dhaka Metropolitan Police Commissioner in this regard and clearly asked them not to arrest any candidates or their supporters having no previous arrest warrants.

He, however, said if candidates and their supporters commit any offence or court gives any direction against them, then the state can take action to protect the lives and properties of people.

The EC secretary said they will give further direction to the law enforcement agencies in a meeting slated to be held on January 22.

When asked, Md Alamgir also said journalists are allowed to enter into the voting centres except secret rooms. They can take statements of all, including polling officers and candidates’ agents, to make reports on the elections, he added.

The elections to Dhaka South City Corporation and Dhaka North City Corporation will be held on January 30.
