Canada won't send Bangabandhu killer Noor Chy back Canadian High Commissioner to Dhaka Benoit Préfontaine

DHAKA: Canadian High Commissioner to Dhaka Benoit Préfontaine said as per Canadian law, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman's self-confessed assassinator Noor Chowdhury will not be sent back to Bangladesh.

He was talking to a press meet ‘DCAB Talk’ at Bangladesh Institute of International and Strategic Study arranged by Diplomatic Correspondents Association of Bangladesh on Thursday (June 27).

In reply to a question whether the Canada government will return Nur Chowdhury, the Canadian High Commissioner said, “The Bangladesh government is trying to bring him back. But I can say Canada does not send any death-row convict back to home. According to Canadian law, historically such convict are not returned”.

Benoit Préfontaine said Canada stands beside Bangladesh to solve the Rohingya crisis. Besides, Canada has been providing assistance to the Rohingya who took shelters in Bangladesh. Since the beginning of the crisis in 2017, the Canadian government has provided 86.8 million US dollars humanitarian assistance for Rohingyas.

In response to a question, the Canadian High Commissioner said Canada has good relations with all political parties in Bangladesh. That is both the government and the opposition.

DCAB President Raheed Ejaz and General Secretary Nurul Islam also spoke at the programme.
