BARHATTA (NETROKONA): Netrokona’s Barhatta Upazila Parishad Chairman Manik Azad survived a mob beating after allegedly attempting to rape a widowed woman. 

He went into hiding following the incident. 

The incident happened at College Road area of Barhatta, Thursday (Sept 27) night.

The victim told Banglanews that Chairman Manik went to her residence after making a phone-call to her in the evening. Afterwards, he tried to rape her. 

As she started screaming, locals caught him red-handed and give him a good thrashing.

At one stage, he fled the scene, added the woman.  

On information, UNO Farida Yasmin and Barhattta Police Station OC Badrul Alam Khan visited the spot and brought the situation under control.

The victim was taken to police custody for security reasons, said the UNO.

Next steps will be taken as per the law, Farida Yasmin added.

The process to file a case under Women and Children Repression Prevention Act is underway, the OC said.
