DHAKA: A Dhaka court granted Prothom Alo’s Editor Matiur Rahman bail in a case filed over the death of Nayeemul Abrar Rahat, a student of Dhaka Residential Model College.

Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Muhammad Kaisarul Islam issued the order on Monday after Matiur had surrendered to the court.

On Jan 20, the High Court granted four weeks of bail to Prothom Alo Editor in the case and asked to surrender to the lower court when this term expires.

Abrar was electrocuted during the anniversary programme of Prothom Alo’s youth magazine Kishor Alo on November 1 last year.

On November 6, the victim’s father Mojibur Rahman filed the case with the Fourth Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court in Dhaka in this connection.

The accused include - Prothom Alo’s Editor Matiur Rahman, youth magazine Kishor Alo’s Editor Anisul Hoque and Prothom Alo employees Kabir Bakul, Shuvashish Pramanik Shuvo, Md Mahitul Alam Pavel, and Shah Paran Tushar.

Other accused are: Jasim Uddin, Mosharraf Hossain, Sujan, and Kamrul Hawlader.

He also accused Kishor Alo and the school authorities of concealing the information of Nayeemul's death, and continuing the program despite the tragic incident. 

Earlier on Thursday (Jan 16), the court of Dhaka additional chief metropolitan magistrate Md Kaisarul Islam issued arrest warrants against 10 persons, including Prothom Alo editor, in the case.

On January 16, a Dhaka court issued warrants of arrest against 10 over Nayeemul's death after the investigation report had been submitted. 

Prothom Alo’s Editor Matiur Rahman along with deputy editor Anisul Hoque and four other accused filed their bail pleas with the High Court on January 19.
