Gambling declared illegal across country

DHAKA:  The High Court has declared gambling illegal across the country including 13 elite clubs in Bangladesh. 

The HC bench of Justice Sheikh Hassan Arif and Justice Md Mahmud Hassan Talukder came up with the order on Monday (February 10).

Lawyer Redowan Ahmed Ranjib moved for the petitioner while Barrister Ruhul Kuddus Kajal stood for Dhaka club.

The court also directed the law-enforcement agencies to take steps to stop this game played in exchange for money and to seize gambling equipment, said Lawyer Redowan Ahmed Ranjib.

The defendants of the writ were - Home Secretary, Inspector General of Police, Dhaka Metropolitan, Chattogram Metropolitan, Khulna Metropolitan, Sylhet Metropolitan Police Commissioner, RAB’s Director General, and deputy commissioners of Dhaka, Chattogram, Sylhet, Khulna and Narayanganj.

The 13 clubs are as follows: Dhaka Club, Uttara Club, Gulshan Club, Dhanmondi Club, Banani Club, Officers’ Club Dhaka, Dhaka Ladies’ Club, Cadet College Club, Chittagong Club, Chittagong Seniors’ Club, Narayanganj Club, Sylhet Club and Khulna Club.
