BNP demands fresh Dhaka city polls

DHAKA: BNP demanded fresh elections to Dhaka south and north city corporations as people’s opinion, according to the party, was not reflected in the Feb 01 voting.

Only 7-9 percent votes were cast in the city polls, the party claimed.

Party secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir was speaking at a post-election press conference at Emanuel's Banquet Hall in Gulshan area of the capital.

BNP’s defeated two mayoral candidates, Tabith Awal and Ishraque Hossain organized the press conference to give their formal reactions over the polls held on Saturday (Feb 1).

Fakhrul said: “People’s opinion was not reflected in the city polls as they could not cast their votes. So, we calls for holding fresh elections canceling the results of the polls,” Fakhrul said.

He also said the democracy won’t be restored in the country without the release of the party chairperson Khaleda Zia.
