12 to die for killing lawyer's assistant of Dhaka

DHAKA: A court here awarded death penalty to twelve people for killing Mobarak Hossain Bhuiyan, a member of Association of Assistants to Lawyers of Dhaka Bar.

Judge Md Monir Kamal of Dhaka Speedy Trial Tribunal-3 on Monday (Oct 21) handed down the verdict. 

The court also fined Tk 20,000 each to the convicted persons.

Besides, the court sentenced the two other accused to one year imprisonment and acquitted Jainal Abedin alias Falu from the murder charge.

The death-row convicts are - Md Mahbubur Rahman Bhuiyan alias Mahub, Mozammel Haque Bhuiyan alias Badal Bhuiyan, Afzal Bhuiyan, Emdadul Haque alias Sikrit Bhuiyan, Nayan Bhuiyan, Bhulon Bhuiyan alias Vulu, Ruhul Amin, Shipon Miah, Sultana Akhter, Delwar Hossian, Bidhan Sonyasi and Nilufa Akhter.

The jail term recipients ate ---Taslima Akter and Shamim alias Faisal bin Ruhul.

Among the accused, Sultana, Delwar, Vidhan and Nilufa are absconding. The rest were in the dick when the verdict was announced.

Special Public Prosecutor (PP) of the tribunal Mahbubur Rahman argued for the state.

According to prosecution, Mobarak Hossian Bhuiyan was founding member of Mritika Protibandhi Foundation and Protibandhi Shishu Pathshala. The convicts have been opposing the Protibandhi foundation for long.  

Following the dispute, they halted renovation work of the foundation on October 22, 2015 and then they tried to vandalise the organization later on that day. Facing obstruction from Mobarak Hossian Bhuiyan, the opponents murdered him in a planned way.

Later on October 22, Mozammel Haque Bhuiyan, secretary of the Mritika Protibandhi Foundation and also younger brother of the victim, filed a murder case with Bajitpur police station of Kishoreganj.  

After investigation, officer in charge of Bajitpur police station on January 2 in 2017 submitted the charge sheet in the murder case.

On December 17 of that year, the tribunal indicted the accused in the case. The tribunal recorded depositions of 23 witnesses.
