South Africa has not won many global tournaments. So far can recollect they won only one and that was Champions trophy at Dhaka Bangladesh. In every global tournament whether ODI or T20 South Africa promises to rock.
But they choke most times. Everything is not always well in Cricket management. For reasons best known to both AB de Villiers he is not playing for his country. All-rounder Chris Morris is not in the squad. Yet South Africa may prove dark horse in the ensuing World Cup. They have quality and depth not only to compete well with West Indies, England and Australia in a very difficult group of Super 12. But they would be a push over. Off course they have to shrug off Choker tag and deliver at the right stage at the right moment. The team looked good in the recent T20 series against Sri Lanka. The team has depth in batting. The pacers bowl with penetration, spinners may turn as match winners and they always field well. Some of the players are also having some feel of UAE condition being part of IPL francize.
South Africa squad: Temba Bavuma (C), Keshav Maharaj, Quinton de Kock (Wicket Keeper), Bjorn Fortuin, Reeza Hendricks, Heinrich Klaasen, Aiden Markram, David Miller, W Mulder, Lungi Ngidi, Anrich Nortje, Dwaine Pretorius, Kagiso Rabada, Tabraiz Shamsi, Rassie van der Dussen.
Traveling Reserves: Andile Phehlukwayo, Lizaad Williams, and George Linde
South African star spinner Imran Tahir, star all-rounder Chris Morris and former South Africa skipper Faf du Plessis are not in the squad. Once again mentioning that I would have safely bet on the team if the squad had Mr 360 degree AB de Villiers and Chris Morris. But the above squad has also no dearth of skills and quality.
The squad has added 3 spinners for the UAE’s spin-friendly condition. Keshav Maharaj would make his T20 debut; Bjorn Fortuin and Tabraiz Shamsi are his spinning mates. Kagiso Rabada, Lungi Ngidi and Anrich Nortje are comparable with any pace combination. On a wicket with reasonable pace and bounce this combination may prove match winners. Captain Temba Bavuma, Quinton de Cock, Aiden Markram, Henrich Klassen, Rassie van der Dussen and David Miller can put together defendable scores for their powerful bowling attack to defend. Although West Indies and England are the two-fancied side in the group I would not be surprised if South Africa push one of them out of the knock out round.
Announcing the squad Victor Mpitsang CSA Convenor of s electors said: "The National S election Panel and I are extremely excited to announce this squad, which we believe is a world-beating squad. It has been a busy last few months for the Proteas and we have had enough time to assess our options and we are pleased with the outcome."
South Africa is in Group 1 of the Super 12 with England, Australia, the West Indies, and two qualifiers. They will start their journey for the T20 world cup 2021 against Australia in Abu Dhabi on October 23. Would be pleased if South Africa reaches the knock out stage playing to their potential. But it would not be easy.
