Kiron: Dynamic Database

If you ask many present day leading sportsman about Nazmul Amin Kiron he or she may not straightaway recognize the frail structured grey haired middle aged Kiron. But I am sure the first and second generation sports community – players, officials, journalists, sports writers will immediately recognize Kiron.

He is a living encyclopedia of Bangladesh sports arena, a dynamic database. Ask him to provide you a photograph; a report on any leading player of the past, report of any major sports event, Kiron will produce you in no time. I have not seen him for over 25 years and have not talked with him directly.

I got his FB link for about a month and have seen his online sports desk. Believe me honestly speaking the materials Kiron possesses can create the foundation of a very good sports museum. This writer had opportunity of visiting Lords Cricket Museum, MCG Cricket Museum, and Bradman Museum at Bowral. If Kiron gets opportunity and support, it is very much possible to start such a sports museum.

Over the last one moth we got connected we had two sad demise of two sports icons –Sabbir Yusuf and Ziaul Islam Masud.  Another National Cricketer got Rehan Hasan got indisposed. As soon as these were broken to me I fall back on Kiron for photograph support of my tributes. Kiron within hour responded with his unique collection.

Whatever is the present state of Bangladesh sports arena now, it had a glorious past. The 1970s and 1980s were golden age of Bangladesh sports arena when Dhaka stadium was the place of pilgrimage of all activities. Bangladesh youth were basking in the sunshine of sporting glories. Football, Cricket, hockey, athletics, basketball, badminton, shooting Bangladesh sports arena had budding talents everywhere.

Football, cricket, hockey retained the glorious past and other games were just flourishing. Sports journalism in 1970s and 1980s was also had quality and commitment. There were very small windows of opportunity though. Few dailies and fewer weeklies had sports page and there were only a handful senior quality sports reporters were serving those small out lets.

We, a group of freshers under the active patronage of veteran sports journalists Mohammad Qaumruzzaman , late Ataul Huq Mallick ,late Abdul Hamid and Late Tawfique Aziz Khan started writing on sports as freelance sports writers. It was more of a passion than profession. Late Bodiuzzaman , Abdul Towhid, Ekramuzzaman , Azam Mahmood , Akhtar Hossain Khan , Rouful Hasan were leading sports writers of our time.

We from BUET me, Maung Kyaw Sein , Khalid Hasan started writing regularly for bilingual sports fortnightly Kirajagat / Sports world . Late Salma Rafique, Sanaul Huq Khan, Khondokar Tareq and few others were the heart of Krirajagat / Sports world under active guidance of Tawfique Aziz and Ataul Huq Mallick. The success of Krirajagat created a new breed of very talented young writers like Dulal, Tito, Kiron, Babu, Dilu, Shamim .This young bunch brought dynamism in sports writing.

Many newspapers , online media and electronic media has now opened wide avenues of sports reporting and sports writing though sporting activities both in terms of quality and skills have not advanced to expected level though . In early days of Bangladesh sporting activities were mostly amateur. Players and sportsmen mostly were committed for their love of the game.

Though a half professionalism and half amateurism now prevails yet Bangladesh in international arena is progressively going down excepting offcourese some isolated achievents in cricket and few other games. Among the main reasons may be Bangladesh sports literature failed to present the heroes of the past properly to present generation.

We doubt whether present generation of national players even knows much about the leading sportsmen and players of the past. Not only the authority failed to maintain proper records of the games but also we find very few in-depth sports write ups highlighting the performances of individual players and teams of the past.

Last year during my brief Dhaka visit I could manage to make out sometime to visit Krirajagat and its editor Dulal Mahmood. He presented me two of his books where he made splendid efforts of sporting heroes of the past. Another sports writer cum sports photographer Nazmul Amin Kiron in my knowledge has a very rich collection of sports literature a short of personal archive. I was desperate in finding his links for the last few years.

But my extremely busy international assignment did not allow me opportunity for getting in touch with Kiron. Suddenly the opportunity came. Zahid Nawaz Khan News Editor and a leading Journalist requested me whether I could write on FIFA World Cup for an online media banglanews24. I was not on regular employment for a while for pressing domestic needs. I started contributing for banglanews24 on World Cup soccer. Somehow from the share of my write ups on FB first Kiron, then Tito and Shuvro established links with me. It was after 20 years I had opportunity to find three of the most talented sports writers of 1908s and 1990s.

I have planned to write a reliable information based history of post-independence sporting activities establishing a chronological development of events.  I know Nazmul Amin Kiron has his own website and extensive resource of information. Kiron has paper clippings and most of the copies of past published sports magazines.

He has huge inventory of photographs and useful records. If all these documents can be properly archived this can act as invaluable data base for Bangladesh sports. I do not think it is possible for Kiron alone to preserve all these for a long time and many of these with the passage of time will get dilapidated and lost.

For the sake of preserving our sporting culture and tradition for our posterity I would strongly recommend to any sports loving individual and organization to sponsor Kiron for a sports memorabilia exhibition first and then take required initiative for properly preserving all these documents in digital database.
