Chelsea’s teenage forward Estevao struck a dramatic stoppage-time winner to hand his side a 2-1 victory over defending Premier League champion Liverpool at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, leaving Arsenal top of the table heading into the international break.
The 17-year-old Brazilian slid in at the far post to convert a low cross in added time, sealing a third consecutive defeat for Arne Slot’s Liverpool and sparking jubilant celebrations among the home supporters. It was Estevao’s first goal since joining Chelsea from Palmeiras earlier this season.
Moises Caicedo had given Chelsea a first-half lead with a powerful strike from outside the box, but Liverpool’s Cody Gakpo levelled after the break.
“Last season, we lost against Chelsea as well. Stamford Bridge is always a difficult place to play. We were very close to a result — it’s all about small margins,” said Liverpool manager Arne Slot.
Reflecting on his team’s recent setbacks — including defeats at Galatasaray in the Champions League and at Crystal Palace in the league — Slot added: “As I said at Galatasaray, we had a one-vs-one and then they get a penalty. We conceded in extra, extra time against Palace. And then today, they score a goal that could go either way.”
The defeat saw Liverpool surrender top spot to Arsenal, who moved one point clear after beating West Ham 2-0 earlier in the day.
Meanwhile, Manchester United secured a much-needed 2-0 win over Sunderland, easing pressure on manager Ruben Amorim. The result halted a poor run of form, though Amorim has yet to guide United to consecutive league victories nearly a year into his tenure. Still, Saturday’s performance marked a positive step forward for the Portuguese coach.
