Matthaus interested in Cameroon vacancy

PRETORIA: German World Cup winning captain Lothar Matthaus revealed on Thursday that he is interested in becoming coach of Cameroon.

The 49-year-old - who led West Germany to the 1990 World Cup title - told SID, a subsidiary of AFP, that he had been in touch with the Cameroon Football Federation over the hotseat, left vacant after Frenchman Paul Le Guen stepped down following a disappointing World Cup finals where they lost all three group matches.

"We have been in touch, now we will have to see what comes out of the discussions, but it is a very interesting post," said Matthaus, the 1990 world player of the year.

"I know football well and also African football. I have already been to Africa and I watched several matches."

Matthaus, who is at the finals as a consultant for an Arabic television station, has had a chequered career as a coach since retiring as a player.

The former midfielder, who has not coached since leaving Israeli side Maccabi Netanya in June 2009 when the club experienced financial problems, has coached Austrian club Rapid Vienna, Partizan Belgrade of Serbia and the Hungarian national team from 2004-05.
