A Dhaka court has issued a travel ban on Jatiya Party chairman Golam Mohammad (GM) Quader and his wife, Sherifa Quader, in connection with a corruption inquiry.
The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) confirmed the order on Thursday (September 4). Its public relations officer, Akterul Islam, said the ban followed a petition filed on September 1 by ACC Deputy Director Rezaul Karim, who is leading the investigation.
Acting Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Ibrahim Mia granted the request, citing the need to prevent the accused from leaving Bangladesh while the inquiry is ongoing.
The court order stated that GM Quader, a former lawmaker from Rangpur-3, and others are under investigation over allegations of corruption, abuse of power, and the acquisition of wealth beyond known sources of income. It added that there was a risk the accused might attempt to leave the country, which could delay or obstruct the inquiry.
“In the interest of a fair investigation, a travel ban is essential,” the court said, noting that any attempt by the accused to flee abroad could hinder or prolong proceedings.
The ruling directed the Special Police Super of Immigration Administration at Bangladesh Police’s Special Branch in Malibagh, Dhaka, along with other relevant authorities, to take necessary measures to enforce the order.
