Police have been stationed outside the Jatiya Party’s central office in Kakrail, Dhaka, since Saturday (August 30) morning, a day after violent clashes erupted in the area.
According to officers at the scene, the deployment began around 8 am.
Sub-Inspector Shanto of Ramna Police Station said that the personnel, drawn from both Ramna Police Station and Rajarbagh Police Lines, would remain in place until further notice.
Despite the heavy police presence, no leaders or activists of the Jatiya Party or other political groups were seen in front of the office on Saturday morning.
Shops in the surrounding area gradually reopened, with owners sweeping away bricks and debris that had been hurled during Friday night’s clashes. Bricks still littered the street in front of the party office on Saturday.
The unrest broke out late Friday (August 29) outside the Jatiya Party headquarters, when rival groups engaged in a series of chases and counter-chases, pelting bricks and stones at each other.
Among those injured was Nurul Haque Nur, president of the Gono Odhikar Parishad and a former vice president of Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU).
Nur was seen in widely shared social media videos bleeding heavily from his face and chest, with his nose fractured. He was carried away on a stretcher by supporters and taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where he was admitted to the intensive care unit.
