BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman has said that guaranteeing democratic rights is essential to preventing the resurgence of fascism in Bangladesh.
Speaking as the chief guest at a pre-rally gathering on Wednesday (August 6) marking the first anniversary of the fall of the Awami League government and the student-led popular uprising, he welcomed the July Declaration announced by the Chief Adviser on August 5.
Tarique Rahman said the declaration outlines a timeline for national elections and aims to establish a democratic government directly elected by the people and accountable to them—an initiative the BNP has endorsed.
“If the democratic rights of the people are upheld, fascism will not return,” Rahman said adding, “No one is safe in the absence of the rule of law and democracy. While political disagreements may exist, we must not become so divided that we cease all communication. National unity among all parties is crucial.”
He described the current moment as a historic turning point in the journey to restore democratic and political rights, one that the people of Bangladesh have awaited for over fifteen years.
Addressing the crowd at the beginning of what he called a victory march for democracy under BNP’s leadership, he urged the people to remain united.
He said, “Regardless of which party you belong to, it’s important to remember that no one was safe under fascist rule. Just as my own children were not safe, neither were yours. Our voting rights were taken away.”
BNP Acting Chairman reiterated his call for continued unity to safeguard democracy and national interests.
