No reason to delay election in name of reform: BNP’s Amir Khasru

Senior BNP leader Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury has said that there is “no justification” for postponing national elections under the pretext of justice and electoral reforms.

He said, "From where we stand today, we send a clear message—democracy means elections. There is no reason to delay the polls by citing the need for reform or justice."

He made the remarks while speaking as a special guest at a youth rally organised by Jatiyatabadi Jubo Dal, Swechchhasebak Dal and Chhatra Dal in front of the BNP’s central office in Nayapaltan on Wednesday (May 28) afternoon.

He argued that BNP was the first political party in the country to formally propose structural reforms.

“Begum Khaleda Zia presented Vision 2030 years ago, and two years ago, during Hasina’s fascist rule, Tarique Rahman introduced a 28-point reform agenda, later expanded to 31 points. Reforms are not an excuse to delay the people's right to vote.”

Khasru added that BNP has made more sacrifices than any other political party for the sake of democracy and is best placed to implement reform and restore justice—after coming to power.

Highlighting the role of youth in the country’s democratic struggle, he said, “Today’s youth have gathered to demand their voting rights. It is now our duty to fulfill their aspirations.”

The rally drew hundreds of supporters throughout the day, with BNP-affiliated activists arriving in processions from different wards of Dhaka and from districts including Sylhet, Faridpur and Mymensingh.

The event was held under the banner “Rally for the Establishment of Youth Rights.”
