Police charge baton on anti-sculpture protesters

Police on Friday charged baton on protesters who staged a demonstration in Dhaka opposing the erection of sculptures across the country.

The protesters brought out a procession and tried to block the road in front of the Baitul Mukarram National Mosque after the Jumma prayers around 2pm.

As police tried to bar them from doing so, protesters attacked police with brick-bats, forcing them to charge batons in retaliation and disperse the crowd.

Motijheel zone Assistant Deputy Commissioner (ADC) of Police Enamul Huq Mithu said: "DMP has already banned rallies and processions without permission. We put a barricade in Palton area as we saw a procession moving towards Shahbagh from Baitul Mukarram mosque."

"We had to charge baton on the protesters to disperse them after they broke the barricade," he added.

The ADC, however, failed to mention which party or organization arranged the procession.
