LONDON: Bangladesh-born British parliamentarian Rushanara Ali is set to compete for the deputy leader position of Labour Party of Britain.

Her name, among others, was included as party leader Edward Miliband and deputy leader Harriet Harman announced to resign from their respective posts after the party’s defeat in the recent British general elections.

However, deputy leader Harriet Harman is currently working as the acting leader of the party.

Leader and deputy leader will be elected in the upcoming party conference in September. One needs the support of at least 35 party parliamentarians’ to be elected as deputy leader.

Rushanara has already got verbal supports of 35 party parliamentarians. She is expected to submit her nomination paper in mid-June.

Meanwhile, names of Stella Creasy and Benjamin Peter James Bradshaw, commonly known as Ben Bradshaw, are also being uttered for the post.

Rushanara’s announcement to compete for the deputy leader position of Labour Party has created a huge uproar among the Bangladeshi expatriates community in Britain.

However, Labour Party earned a massive support from ‘ethnic minority’ community in the latest general elections.
