KISHOREGANJ: Five people were killed and 630 houses damaged as nor'westers lashed different places in Kishoreganj district from Saturday evening to Sunday dawn.
The storm-affected areas included Katiadi, Kuliarchar, Pakundia, Bajitpur and Bhairab upazilas of the district.
The deceased were identified as Ria Akterm, 10, daughter of Abdul Hannan of Patalchar of Bajitpur, Abdul Mannan, 60, Kazirchar of Katiadi, Shital Chandra Barman, 32, of Kuliarchar and Hazrat Ali, 35, and son Rizon Mian, 7, of Kazihati village of Pakundia.
Hospital sources said that Ria was injured on her head as a tree fell down during the storm in Patalchar village of Bajitpur Saturday evening.
She was rushed to Upazila Health Complex and shifted to Jahurul Islam Medical College and Hospital. Ria succumbed to her injuries on the way to the hospital.
Police sources said Ali and his son died in sleep as a tree hell on their house in Kazihati village around 12:30am on Sunday.
At the same time, a tree fell down on the house of Mannan of Kazirchar village, leaving him severely injured. He was taken to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries early Sunday, the sources added.
According to the sources, a tree tumbled down a moving CNG-run auto-rickshaw in Dariakandi area of Kuliarchar, leaving its passenger Shital dead on the spot.
Dr M Zamir Uddin of Bajitpur Upazila Health Complex, Pakundia Thana officer-in-charge (OC) Hasan Al Mahmud, Katiadi Thana OC Hedayetul Islam Bhuiyan, and Kuliarchar Thana OC Chowdhury Mizanuzzaman separately confirmed the matter to banglanews.
Meanwhile, nor'wester hit different places in Bhairab upazila from Saturday evening to Sunday dawn, damaging 630 houses including a mosque and a primary school there.
Of the houses, 350 are in Sadekpur union, 150 in Sreegar, 100 in Aganagar and 30 in Shimulkandi union.
Bhairab Upazila Project Implementation Officer (PIO) Mohammad Shahid Ullah confirmed the matter to banglanews.
The storm caused an estimated damage of Tk 7 to 8 crore, the PIO said.
