DHAKA: Under the auspice of the Ministry of Strategy and Finance of the Republic of Korea and with the support of Korean Embassy in Bangladesh, Korea Development Institute (KDI) and Korea Institute of Intellectual Property (KIIP) share Korean experiences on development of intellectual property with Bangladesh Government.
The Final Reporting Workshop of the Knowledge Sharing Program (KSP) was held on April 8, 2015 at Sonargaon Hotel in Dhaka.
Stakeholders in intellectual property field, from scholars to government officials from Ministry of Industries, Department of Patent, Designs and Trademarks to managing directors of firms in the field got together to share final policy recommendations on development of intellectual property in Bangladesh.
KSP is a program that the Ministry of Strategy and Finance of the Republic of Korea launched in 2004. Main purpose of the program is to share Korea’s development know-how for co-prosperity with the partner countries through sharing experiences and working together. The operation of the program is as follows; Partner countries request policy recommendation on their interested economic field to Korea, and once the topic is selected, Korean and local consultants team up and start to research and develop the best policy for the partner country. In doing so, the experts visit each country to share their experiences and provide training if necessary for the best outcome.
KSP with Bangladesh has begun since 2012. In 2012, the topics for KSP were ‘Development of Airport’ and ‘Improvement of External Debt Management of ERD’. After the successful consultation on External Debt Management of ERD, Bangladesh government again submitted a similar demand and had consultation on ‘Capacity Enhancement for Macroeconomic Analysis and Debt Management Skills of Bangladesh ERD’ in 2013.
This year, the Department Patent, Designs and Trademarks of Bangladesh submitted a KSP demand on ‘Strengthening Capacity of the Bangladesh International Intellectual Property (IP) and Policy Consultancy for the Administration of Geographical Indication (GI)’.
For this year’s KSP with Bangladesh, Mr. Ha Dong Man, Senior Advisor of KSP consultation and former Commissioner of Korea Intellectual Property Office (KIPO) of the Republic of Korea, Mr. Hyun-joo Kim, Charge d’Affaires of Korean Embassy in Bangladesh, Mr. Md. Sanowar Hossain, Registrar of the Department of Patents, Designs and Trademarks(DPDT) of Bangladesh, among others, were present at the final reporting workshop and shared their opinions on final policy recommendations.
Mr. Hyun-joo Kim, Korean Charge d’Affaires said in a congratulatory speech “in the course of becoming a middle-income country and Digital Bangladesh by 2021, Bangladesh will get more boost from this knowledge sharing of Korea and Korea will continue to stand by Bangladesh to improve the welfare of its people, helping meet its MDG goals and accomplish all your Visions
