BAGERHAT: A suspected leader of a robber gang was killed in a gunfight with Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) at Katakhali in Chandpai Range of Sundarbans East Zone in Rampal Upazila on Wednesday evening.

The deceased was identified as Kamrul Sheikh, 35, deputy-head of ‘Raju-Farid Bahini’ – a forest robbing gang of Sundarbans.

RAB-8 commanding offer Lt. Colonel Faridul Alam confirmed the matter to banglanews.

Faridul said that, tipped-off, a RAB team raided in the area around 7:30pm. Sensing the lawpersons’ presence, the gang members began firing bullets targeting the RAB men.

RAB retaliated with gunshots, triggered a gunfight that lasted for 20 minutes, killing Kamrul on the spot.

RAB also recovered a total of eight firearms – a rifle, a foreign-made air gun, six one-barreled guns, 21 rounds of bullets, 32 rounds of air gun bullets, and 25 rounds of lead from the spot.

The body and the ammo have been handed over to Rampal Thana police, the RAB officer said.
