GOPALGANJ: A 10-year old boy was killed and 30 others injured as a passenger bus plunged into the Madhumati River at Padmabila area of the district Sadar town Monday noon.
The deceased was identified as Mehedi Khalasi, 10, son of one Sekandar Khalasi, hailed from Muksudpur upazila of the district.
Former president of district motor sramik union Saidur Rahman Basu told banglanews that the bus plunged into Madhumati River from Gopalganj-Tekerhat road at Padmabila area as one of the front tyres of the bus burst and driver lost control over the steering.
Residential medical officer of Gopalganj Sadar Hospital Tapan Kumar Majumder said they treated 30 passengers so far.
One of the injured passengers said the bus was overcrowded and the death toll might rise.
Additional superintendent of police Zahidul Islam told banglanews that with the help of local people, police and fire service men and divers are conducting the rescue work.
Another team of divers was coming from Khulna, he added.
