DHAKA: Dr. Ferdinand von Weyhe, acting German Ambassador to Dhaka, on Sunday said German buyers would not give any concession on physical, emotional and work place safety issues of workers.
He made the assertion while addressing an inauguration ceremony of ‘Denims and Jeans Show’ arranged at Hotel Radisson in the city at noon.
The envoy said that Germany is one of the big buyers of the garment industry of Bangladesh. So, we want to maintain good relations with entrepreneurs of the country.
He added: “But we must pay attention to the status of the workers who made the garments which we wear. We will never give concessions on workers’ safety issues in excuse of low price of product.”
Ferdinand von Weyhe said the factories which will ensure social, environmental and other security of workers will get priority in attaining export orders.
He said many factories have taken various measures to ensure workers’ safety. We would like to appreciate it.
Regarding jeans show, the acting envoy said German is the buyer of a large percentage of Jeans product made in Bangladesh. Such initiatives will create good relationships between German and Bangladeshi entrepreneurs.
Such initiatives will be taken more in future, he added.
The show will remain open from 9:30am to 6:30pm on March 1-2 where a total of five countries have participated.
The participants-- Bangladesh India, Pakistan, China and Turkey—are showcasing their Jeans products in 28 stalls in the fair.
