DHAKA: The government has given approval draft of the ‘Bangladesh Institutes of Development Studies Bill-2015’, subjected to the vetting.
The approval came from a regular cabinet meeting at secretariat with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the chair on Monday.
The law has been formulated converting Bangladesh Institute of Development Studies (Amendment) Ordinance, 1984 into Bengali with some changes.
After the cabinet meeting, cabinet secretary M Musharraf Hossain Bhuiyan told reporters.
He said it was named as Bangladesh Institutes of Development Studies in 1974 which was established in 1957 named as the Pakistan Institute of Development Economics (PIDE). Later, an ordinance has been passed in 1984 amending the law.
The Bangladesh Institute of Development Studies (BIDS) is an autonomous multi-disciplinary public research organization that conducts policy research on development issues for Bangladesh.
The institute conducts research and promotes study and education in development economics, rural development, demographics and social sciences.
The BIDS is governed by a high-powered Board of Trustees, with the Minister for Planning, Government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh as the Chairman and the Director General as the Chief Executive of the Institute.
