Train services were resumed early today through Pirgachha railway station after remaining suspended for more than 10 hours due to the derailment of a commuter train.
The incident occurred on Tuesday around noon when the Lalmonirhat-bound commuter train Padmarag from Santahar entered Pirgachha station to give way to the Santahar-bound Dolonchapa Express coming from the opposite direction.
While shifting from the loop line back to the main track, six compartments of the commuter train derailed, halting train movement through the station.
As a result, several trains were stranded at Naldanga, Bamandanga, and Chowdhurani stations. Rail communication between Gaibandha and the northern districts of Rangpur, Lalmonirhat, and Dinajpur also remained suspended for hours, according to Abul Kashem, stationmaster of Gaibandha rail station.
The stranded compartments were rescued and restored to the line by a relief train from Lalmonirhat.
Normal train operations resumed around 2:30 am today, allowing passengers to continue their journeys.
