Former judge Golam Rasul passes away

DHAKA: Former District and Sessions Judge of Dhaka Kazi Golam Rasul, who delivered verdict of Bangabandhu Mujibur Rahman murder case, died of old-age complications on Thursday morning.

He was 72.

Rasul, a former member of Bangladesh Public Service Commission, breathed his last in city’s United Hospital around 9:30am.

Hearing the death news, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, also ruling Awami League president, rushed to the hospital to see the judge one last time.

The premier expressed her profound shock and prayed for eternal peace of the departed soul, conveying sympathy to the bereaved family members.

The Namaz-e-Janaza of Golam Rasul will be held at Kakrail Circuit House Road Tiptop Jame Mosque after Asr prayers on Thursday. He will be buried at Banani Graveyard in the city.

He was survived by his wife, three daughters and a host of relatives, friends, admirers and well-wishers to mourn his death.

In 1998, Rasul, the then-Dhaka District and Sessions judge, sentenced 15 former military officers to death in much-awaited Bangabandhu Killing Case.

However, on the dark night of August 15 in 1975, Bangabandhu and most of his family members were assassinated by a group of army men.
