15,000 people marooned in Rangpur

RANGPUR: Heavy rainfalls and onrush of water from the upstream triggered flash flood that marooned some 15,000 people in the district.

Most of the areas went under flood water in Gangachara and Kaunia upazilas of the district.

The Teesta River water is flowing 20-cm above of danger level at Dalia point.

Erosion took an alarming turn in Alam Bidhitar union of Gangachara upazila and Shahidbagh and Tepamadhupur unions of Kaunia upazila.

Several hundred families rendered homeless as low lying areas of the district went under water due to heavy rain and onrush of water.

Especially Shalbon, Mistripara, Botla, Nilkantha, Palpara, Mulatol, Dhap, Radhaballav, Guptapara, Kamalkachhna, Babupara, Guratipara, Mahiganj, Baharkachhna, Jummapara, Kukrul, Burihaat and Staion area flooded so badly.

Rangpur Weather Forecast Officer Atikur Rahman said that 280-milimeter rainfall was recorded from Sunday morning to Monday noon.

The area may witness further rainfall, he added.

The day laborers are being worst sufferers as they can’t go out due to heavy downpour and hostile weather.

Officer of Rangpur Water Development Board Mahabub Hossain said that the water level of Teesta has been increasing from Monday morning.

The water level may rise in the afternoon, he added.
