DHAKA:  Nearly one thousand workers at Tuba Group remain confined to the factory since Wednesday morning as unidentified miscreants put the factory’s main entrance under lock and key.

Bangladesh Trade Union Centre joint secretary Jony Talukdar confirmed the matter to banglanews at 10:30am on the day.

Jony said, “We are observing fast-unto-death inside the factory, we, on Wednesday morning, found the main entrance locked after awaking from sleeping.”

“As a result, about one thousand workers have fallen trapped inside the factory,” added the workers’ leader.

The workers have started a mass hunger strike in front of Tuba’s garment factories in city’s Badda area since Sunday.

Later on Tuesday, Tuba workers besieged the BGMEA building as per schedule. Later, police charged baton and dispersed them.

Then, the workers staged demonstration in front of the office.

Both the government and the garment owners’ organization BGMEA talked with the worker leaders and promised to take initiatives in solving the problems.

The garment workers did not heed to the speeches of hope from the government and BGMEA.

About 1,600 workers staged demonstration for their wages and bonuses in five factories of Tuba Group.

However, additional law enforcers were deployed in the area and they are in an alert position to avert any untoward situation.
