FROM MAWA GHAT: Police recovered bodies of two women from the Padma river after a launch, Pinak-6, carrying more than 200 passengers, capsized on Mawa-Kawrakandi route in the district on Monday morning.

Besides, at least 40 passengers were rescued from the river and many more remained missing.

Officer-in-charge Tofazzal Hossain of Lohjong Thana confirmed the matter to Banglanews. 

Acting superintendent of police of Munshiganj Zakir Hossain has been monitoring the rescue mission.

Shipping minister Shahjahan Khan also reached to the spot.

Shipping ministry, Bangladesh Inland Water Terminal Corporation and Fire Service Units jointly have been conducting the rescue operation.

Rescue ship has been heading to the spot.

Speedboat owner Lal Miah said due to the heavy wave the launch might be drowned.

Mawa naval police outpost In-Charge Khandaker Khalid said the launch began its journey from Kawrakandi ghat with more than 200 passengers on board and capsized near to Mawa ghat.

Mawa highway traffic inspector Shahdat Hossain confirmed the matter to banglanews.
