Smuggler-BGB gunfight in Cox’sBazar

COX’S BAZAR: A Yaba smuggler and four members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) were inured in a gunfight in Teknaf upazila on Friday night.

The gunfight took place in Naaf River Dam area at Moulvipara of Sadar Union of the upazila at 10:30pm. Some 50,100 pieces of Yaba tablets were seized from the spot.

The injured BGB members are – Khorshed Alam, Mintu Das, M Mazid and Nurul Islam while another injured is M Ismail, 42, a Yaba trader, son of Nuru Sultan of Moulovipara.

The injured were admitted at the Upazila Health Complex.

BGB Battalion-42 commanding officer Lieutenant Colonel Abu Jar Al Zahid told banglanews, a BGB team, led him, took position on the dam area at 10:00pm as they had information that a consignment of Yaba tablets was coming from Myanmar through Naf River.
At one stage, a smugglers group, numbering 4/5, anchored a boat in the area and then they began walking towards the nearby field, the BGB men challenged them.
Sensing law enforcers’ presence, the smugglers began firing targeting the BGB personnel, the BGB members retaliated with gunshots, leaving the five bullet-injured.

Being bullet-hit, Ismail got caught while rest of the smugglers managed to flee the scene. BGB recovered some 50,100 pecies of Yaba tablets and a locally made dagger at the spot.

Ismail told BGB that they were going to Teknaf with the Yaba consignment and another member of their group was also sustained bullet-hit and hid himself in the nearby village.

BGB filed a case with Teknaf Thana in this connection.
