Dhaka ranked sixth among cities with the worst air quality on Wednesday morning, recording an Air Quality Index (AQI) score of 141 at 9:50am.
The air was classified as “unhealthy for sensitive groups,” posing risks to people with respiratory or heart conditions, children, and the elderly.
Lahore, Delhi, and Dubai topped the list with AQI scores of 172, 163, and 160 respectively.
Air quality in Dhaka typically worsens during winter and sees improvement during the monsoon season.
As per World Health Organization (WHO), air pollution kills an estimated seven million people worldwide every year.
