DHAKA: The agitating students of Jagannath University (JnU) staged sit-in demonstrations besieging Bangladesh Bank Sadarghat Branch on Tuesday morning.

They started the program at 11:15 am claiming that the branch of the central bank was built on the university’s land.

Besides, teachers of the university formed a human chain placing eight-point demand.  

On Monday, JnU dormitory recovery movement association convener Shariful Islam confirmed banglanews saying, “We are staging the protest demo as part of our movement,”

The university authorities asked the Bangladesh Bank to shift the branch when Jagannath College turned into university but they did not respond.  

On November 1, 2004, some high officials of the government visited the bank area and later in a recommendation they suggested that Bangladesh Bank authority should get back the land to Jagannath University.   

Later in 2008, the then deputy governor of Bangladesh Bank Morshid Kuli Khan said Bangladesh Bank would shift the branch if government directs in this regard.   

After 2008, many incidents happened to shift the bank branch but no result came out yet.   

However, Shariful insisted that they would continue the movement until the demand is met.
