Objections have been raised to the academic qualifications of Jatiya Sangsad Whip Shamsul Hoque Chowdhury.
Awami League-nominated candidate for the Chattogram-12 (Patiya) constituency Motaherul Islam Chowdhury on Monday (December 4) alleged that the whip’s educational certificate submitted along with his nomination paper for the 12th parliamentary election is not genuine.
Lawyer Md Mujibul Haque on behalf of Motaherul objected to the matter before the returning officer during the scrutinisation of nomination papers at the conference room of the district administration.
While speaking to the reporters, Mujibul said Whip Shamsul Hoque, in the affidavit, has mentioned his educational qualification of “HSC pass.” The certificate he submitted does not contain any roll number, he said.
“He is currently serving as the whip in parliament where he showed his academic qualification with a BCom (Bachelor of Commerce) degree.”
Mujibul added, “The returning officer advised us to appeal against the issue though the nomination paper of Shamsul Hoque has been declared valid.”
Shamsul is going to contest the polls as an independent aspirant after failing to obtain nomination from the party, allegedly for his controversial activities.
On 30 November, he submitted his nomination paper with vehicle carrying the national flag and police protocol, violating the electoral code of conduct in the port city.
The election inquiry committee, formed to investigate pre-election irregularities, has directed Shamsul to appear in person by 2pm Tuesday as he failed to comply by Sunday to address the matter of violating the polls code.
