54 BNP men arrested from Banani as per law: IGP

The recent arrests of 54 BNP leaders and activists from Dhaka’s Banani Club were carried in accordance with the law, said Inspector General of Police Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun today (Mar 25).

He was replying to questions from journalists after a programme at Pan Pacific Sonargaon hotel in the capital.

When the IGP was asked why the arrests were made without any warrants and whether it was done to control political activities of the opposition, the IGP said police can arrest without warrant and it was done in accordance with the law.

Earlier on March 19, police arrested 54 BNP leaders and activists on charges of hatching an anti-state conspiracy at a “secret meeting” at Dhaka’s Banani Club.

Besides, a case was filed against the BNP men with Banani Police Station under the Anti-Terrorism Act following the raid.
