Donald Trump and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi will co-chair an international summit in Sharm el-Sheikh on Monday to discuss the US president’s proposal to end the war in Gaza.
Egypt said leaders from more than 20 countries are expected to attend.
The meeting aims “to end the war in the Gaza Strip, enhance efforts to achieve peace and stability in the Middle East, and usher in a new era of regional security and stability,” Egypt’s presidency said.
United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres and UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer confirmed their participation, alongside Italy’s Giorgia Meloni, Spain’s Pedro Sánchez and France’s Emmanuel Macron.
It was not immediately clear if Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu or any Hamas representatives would attend.
The announcement comes as Palestinians streamed back toward northern Gaza—by foot, car and cart—to devastated homes amid a ceasefire that appeared to be holding.
Israeli forces have partially pulled back under the first phase of a US-brokered agreement intended to halt fighting, with Gaza’s Health Ministry reporting more than 67,000 deaths over nearly two years of war.
Al Jazeera’s Hani Mahmoud, reporting from Gaza City, said the truce “ended one form of violence, but the struggle continues,” noting that basic survival remains precarious even as residents return.
Local authorities said thousands of emergency and public-service operations—ranging from body recovery to water and sewage repairs—have been carried out since the ceasefire took effect, despite severe resource constraints under Israel’s blockade.
