A late-night Iranian ballistic missile attack on northern Israel killed five people and injured several others in the Arab city of Tamra, east of Haifa, emergency services reported on Sunday (June 15).
The assault, which began shortly after 11 p.m. on Saturday, marked Iran’s first missile barrage since early Saturday morning.
Dozens of missiles targeted Israel, prompting nationwide shelter alerts. Sirens blared in northern regions and the Haifa area as air defenses scrambled to intercept the projectiles.
In Tamra, a missile struck a two-story residential building, killing five people, including a woman in her early 20s, and wounding at least five others.
Local residents have repeatedly highlighted the lack of bomb shelters and safe rooms in the city, exacerbating the vulnerability of the community.
By 11:45 p.m., Israel’s Home Front Command issued an all-clear, allowing residents to leave shelters, though authorities warned of potential further attacks overnight.
A video circulating on social media, showing a Jewish family celebrating as missiles hit Tamra, has sparked widespread condemnation. In the clip, a man shouts, “On the village, on the village!” while others chant an anti-Arab phrase, “may your village burn,” and clap as the missiles strike.
Israeli politicians across the spectrum denounced the video. Labor MK Naama Lazimi called the behavior “shameful and disgusting,” stating it lacked any trace of humanity or Jewish values. Deputy Tel Aviv Mayor Asaf Zamir expressed disgust, saying the celebrations made him “nauseated.”
Hadash-Ta’al leader Ayman Odeh labeled the rhetoric as reflective of “warmongers” and called for the arrest of those responsible.
The Tamra strike followed a series of Iranian missile barrages on Friday night and early Saturday, which left three people dead in Ramat Gan and Rishon Lezion, identified as Etti Cohen Engel, Yisrael Aloni, and Yevgenia Blinder.
Magen David Adom reported around 80 injuries across the attacks, with several in serious condition and others suffering from acute anxiety.
Emergency services, including Israel’s Fire and Rescue Service, were deployed to the scene in Tamra to assist victims and secure the area.
