DHAKA: Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Wednesday (April 13) said incumbent government is taking various initiatives to make nursing an attractive career choice.

She made the comment when President of the Kochi University in Kochi City Japan Dr. Hiroko Minami paid a courtesy call to her at PMO in the morning.

Later, premier’s press secretary Ihsanul Karim briefed the journalists about the meeting.

“Prime Minister said, “Nursing was neglected earlier as a profession. But incumbent Awami League government took various steps so that the profession can attract people,” he added.

He also said the premier also highlighted AL government’s achievements in the country’s health sector, including decreasing mother and infant mortality rate.

Quoting Sheikh Hasina, he said the government is set to construct two more medical universities in Chittagong and Rajshahi.

Dr. Hiroko Minami informed Prime Minister that Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) has a plan for the development of Bangladesh nursing sector under the ‘Project for Capacity Building of Nursing Services’.

“This will include obtaining graduation degrees in nursing,” she said.

Prime Minister’s international affairs adviser Gowher Rizvi, Ambassador of Japan in Bangladesh Masato Watanabe and chief representative of Bangladesh office of JICA Mikio Hataeda were, among others, present here.
