Dhaka University (DU) central students’ union (DUCSU) independent vice-president candidate Jalal Ahmed has been sent to jail in an attempted murder case.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Minhajur Rahman passed the order on Wednesday (August 27) afternoon.
The DU administration filed the case with Shahbagh police station accusing Jalal of stabbing his roommate. Following his arrest in the case, he was produced before the court.
According to the case statement, Jalal stabbed a student named Robiul Haque in room 462 of Haji Muhammad Mohsin Hall around 12:30am on Tuesday (26 August).
Witnesses said Jalal attacked his roommate Robiul with a knife following a long-standing quarrel. Injured Robiul is now receiving treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
Narrating the incident, Robiul said, “Around 12:30am Jalal entered the room, turned on the light and started making noise. My sleep was disturbed, so I told him not to make noise as I had to go to the library in the morning. He became angry and called me an illegal outsider. When I protested, he started attacking me. I narrowly managed to save myself.”
After the incident, the university administration handed Jalal over to police.
Hall provost Dr Md Sirajul Islam said around 1am, “He has been expelled from the hall for such a heinous act. Steps will also be taken to cancel his studentship.”
Jalal is a student of the Department of Television and Film, while the injured Robiul is from the Department of Political Science.
