Govt’s debt Tk 87832 cr in 5-yr

FROM JATIYA SANGSHAD: Finance Minister AMA Muhith on Sunday said the government took Tk 232,630 crore through treasury bills and bonds in the last five years from various scheduled banks, financial institutions and Bangladesh Bank.

Out of the amount, the government repaid Tk 144,798 crore and at present the debt is Tk 87,832 crore, he said.

He came up with the came up with the disclosure while addressing the Parliament in response to a query of Begum Rehana Akhter Ranu opposition BNP.

In response to another question of Mohibur Rahman Manik MP (Sunamganj-5), Muhith said the government has brought back Tk 21 crore and 55,000 to country, smuggled to Singapore by Arafat Rahman Koko, younger son of the opposition Chairperson Khaleda Zia.

He also told the House that the number of ongoing projects financed by World Bank (WB) is 29 and the government has taken a loan of Tk 38,022 crore and seven lakh from the organization for these projects.

So far, the government has expended Tk 9677 crore and 50 lakh for these projects, he told the House.
