Pay Moon cinema Hall owner Tk 99cr: SC

DHAKA: The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court directed the Freedom Fighters’ Welfare Trust to pay Tk 99 crore to the owner of Moon Cinema Hall as the property value.

The freedom fighters body was asked to pay the money in three installments.

A five-member appeallate bench led by Acting Chief Justice Abdul Wahhab Miah passed the order Thursday (January 18).  

Lawyer Towfiq Newaz moved for Maksudul Alam, owner of Moon Cinema Hall also Managing Director of Italian Marbles Limited. Attorney General Mahbubey Alam moved for the state, at the courtroom.

As per the court direction, Moon Cinema Hall owner should be paid Tk 25 crore in first two months, more Tk 25 crore in next two months and the remains by July 30.

The cinema hall located in Dhaka’s Waize Ghat Road was handed over to the Freedom Fighters’ Welfare Trust during the Martial Law regime of 1975-79.

In 2011, the Supreme Court directed the freedom fighters’ trust to return properties of Moon Cinema.

Later, in January 2013, Maksudul filed a contempt of court petition with the SC against the concerned authorities and Freedom Fighters’ Welfare Trust for not executing the verdict.
