Biswajit murder: Govt files appeal against acquittal

DHAKA: The government filed an appeal with the Supreme Court, seeking cancellation of acquittal of four accused in the sensational murder of Biswajit Das, who was hacked in broad daylight by the ruling party men.

The state side filed the appeal petition with chamber judge of the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court on Monday morning (November 06).

Deputy attorney general Nazibur Rahman confirmed the matter to the Banglanews. The appeal plea was filed after getting the certified copy of the High Court’s verdict on the death reference and appeals in the murder. The full text of the HC verdict was released on November 01.

Nazibur Rahman said that the apex court may hear the appeal plea on Monday (November 06).

The government decided to challenge the acquittal of four accused from the charges of murdering Biswajit Das.

The High Court on August 6 in its verdict upheld death for two out of eight Bangladesh Chhatra League men initially sentenced to hang by a lower court for killing Bishwajit Das in old Dhaka.

The HC verdict acquitted four of the total 21 accused in the case.

Two were acquitted who were facing the gallows, while two others were acquitted from the life term imprisonment. The fours are-- Saiful Islam Saiful, Kayyum Mia Tipu, Golam Mostafa and AHM Kibira. Of them, Saiful and Kayyum were acquitted from the gallows, while the rest two were acquitted the life term imprisonment.

The 21 members of the ruling Awami League’s student body were convicted of murdering Biswajit Das, a tailor of Old Dhaka, during a strike called by the BNP-led opposition on December 9 in 2012.
