Joyasen Gupta wins Sunamganj by-polls

SUNAMGANJ:  Dr Joya Sengupta, wife of former veteran leader of the ruling Awami League Suranjit Sengupta, has won the by-polls of Sunamgaj-2 (Dirai-Shalla) by a large margin of votes.

According to the unofficial result announced on Thursday evening (March 30), Joya Sengupta got 95,959 votes with the symbol ‘boat’, while independent candidate Sayed Ali Mahbub Hossain got 42,156 votes in the by-polls.

The parliamentary seat became vacant following the death of Suranjit Sengupta. He died on February 5.

Voting in 110 polling centres began at 8:00 am and continued till 4:00 pm without break.

Some 1, 38,125 voters out of 252,430 exercised their franchise rights in the by-polls.
