RAJSHAHI: Chameli Khatun, former all-rounder of Bangladesh National Women Cricket Team, has been brought to Dhaka for better treatment as per directive of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

Chameli Khatun was brought to Dhaka through a flight from Shah Makhdum Airport in Rajshahi at noon on Friday (November 2).

Rajshahi Deputy Commissioner (DC) SM Abdul Quader confirmed the matter to Banglanews.

Earlier, the premier Sheikh Hasina took overall responsibilities of the treatment of Chameli Khatun on Wednesday (October 31).

“Prime Minister will bear all treatment cost of sick cricketer Chameli. Therefore, he was told to make all arrangement,” premier’s Protocol Officer Khurshidul Alam said over the phone on Wednesday afternoon (October 31).

Earlier in the day, Rajshahi City Corporation (RCC) Mayor AHM Khairuzzaman Liton also took responsibility of her treatment.

Meanwhile, cricketers Shakib Al Hasan, Mustafizur Rahman, and Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) declared to stand by Chameli for her treatment after the news of her sickness had gone viral in social networking sites.

Chameli Khatun represented Bangladesh in cricket, football and athletics for 12 long years from 1999 to 2011.

She retired from the national women team in 2011 due to her ligament injury.  Apart from her ligament injury, she has also been suffering damages of soft discs in between spinal cord vertebrae which is leading the right part of her body paralyzed.

Physicians said she needs at least Tk 10 lakh for her treatment, but her family is not able to bear the expenses.
