SQ Chy appeals against ICT verdict

DHAKA: Opposition BNP lawmaker Salahuddin Quader Chowdhury on Tuesday appealed against his death sentence given by International Crimes Tribunal (ICT)-1 for his involvement with war crimes during 1971.

On behalf of SQ Chowdhury, his lawyer Advocate Khandaker Mahbub Hossain submitted the appeal petition to the concerned department of appellate division of the Supreme Court.

“Our logic is that Salahuddin Quader Chowdhury was not in the country during the liberation war in 1971. At that time, he was living in Pakistan for the purpose of his education,” said Advocate Khandaker Mahbubur Rahman.

On the other hand, attorney general Mahbub-e-Alam said, “We won’t appeal but we will present our argument in the appeal hearing to uphold the death sentence.”

On October 1, Justice ATM Fazle Kabir led three member of ICT-1 awarded death sentence to Salahuddin Quader Chowdhury who was found guilty of nine charges out of 23 allegations.

Out of total 23 charges, however, SQ Chowdhury was acquitted of eight charges and while the prosecution failed to prove six allegations.
