Tax dodging: BNP MP Harun challenges jail sentence

DHAKA:  BNP MP Harunur Rashid filed an appeal with the High Court challenging a lower court verdict that sentenced him to five years’ imprisonment for enjoying the privilege of importing a car without tax.

The single HC bench of Justice Md Shawkat Hossain could hear the petition in Monday (October 28).

ACC lawyer Khurshid Alam Khan said his client appealed against the punishment and also sought bail in the case.

Earlier on Oct 21, a Dhaka court has jailed BNP leader Harunur Rashid for five years for enjoying the privilege of importing a car without tax as a member of parliament and selling the vehicle later.

Judge Shaikh Nazmul Alam delivered the verdict on Monday.

A tax dodging case was filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission.
